Opioid addiction and abuse is a global health epidemic that has affected my community and people I care for. Throughout our course, I have been excited about this topic and have focused our main project on it. Opioid and heroin usage has been particularly prevalent in the neighborhood where I live and work. “In the year 2020, there were 48 overdose deaths in Sussex County due to heroin, prescription pharmaceuticals, and other narcotics, as well as 119 overdoses when Narcan was delivered by EMS or law enforcement.” Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, has been a major contributor to the rise in overdose rates” (NIH, 2023).
