The research paper is intended to facilitate:
• an in-depth investigation of contemporary conflict, Gay and Lesbian rights in the United States (usually two culturally
differing groups engaged in what is often perceived as an ethnic, religious, or minority
group conflict of some kind in this case people agains gay and lesbian rights and people for them)
Through your investigation of the conflict you will determine:
• what factors, internally and externally, drive and shape the situation and which do not
• other forms of conflict at various levels (local, regional, and beyond)
• how conflict manifests itself socially, culturally, politically, economically, and/or via
other factors
Try to look for a possible solution to this conflict
In this topic, be sure to look into the availability of credible information sources. If you cannot find reliable data, you cannot complete the assignment satisfactorily. Academic journal articles and books are some of the best sources, and you may use a maximum of two (preapproved) personal interviews. Course textbooks and articles may not be used among the required six (6) core resources. Blogs, internet sites, newspaper columns and the like are often based more on opinion than fact, though they can be useful for familiarizing one’s self with the popular argument aspects of a situation or phenomenon. For the purposes of this paper, internet sources will not be accepted as references.
Introduction: There are no style requirements or restrictions on the introduction section of the paper. However, in terms of function, the introduction must clearly specify the topic, focus, goal, the benefits provided to the reader. It is also highly recommended that some sense of the order of the main presentation be included within the introduction.
Body of the paper: The body of the paper must include a brief description of the cultures and the conflict you are looking at, the particular perspective and approach to understanding the conflict that you are using and/or focusing upon, and your analysis of the conflict as derived from your research perspective. The analysis must assume a cultural relativist attitude toward the specific

cultures and cultural practices per se, but that does not preclude your identifying fault, blame, or condemning disparities, prejudice, genocide, ethnocide, or anything of the like. All papers must be spell checked and all sentences must be grammatically correct.
Representation and Citations: You must cite all specific information obtained from references. In other words, data and ideas used in your paper that are not your own must be cited properly in the text of the paper. References must be complete enough so that interested readers can look up your sources for their own research. For this paper, a minimum of six (6) sources are required (excluding all course textbooks, dictionaries, and encyclopedias), properly cited in the text of the paper and listed on the “Works Cited” page. Web sites do NOT constitute credible sources for the purposes of this course.Summary Conclusion: The content of the conclusion (somewhat similar to the introduction, minus the order of presentation) will be discussed in class. Please be sure to include ample supporting statements for your main conclusions/arguments.
Works Cited: This section lists all of the references actually cited in the text of the paper. Entries must be listed in alphabetical order by author’s last (family) name. Names and titles should be spelled out in full (except for the state of publication, e.g. AZ, not Arizona). The format must follow the American Anthropological style.
