Assignment Guidance
1. Essay structure Your essay should have the following sections:
Introduction: should state the aims/purposes of the essay and the outline key sections in the essay (and if you can, tell the reader what line of argument you will present in your essay, but this is not compulsory).
Body of the essay (please don’t use this as a heading): answer the essay question.
Conclusion: summarises your line of argument or your key discussion points presented in the body of the essay to answer the essay question. No new information presented here.
References: list all the references you cited in the essay, using the Harvard referencing style
Note: you don’t have to use headings in this essay but it may be a good idea to have about three to four headings (no more than four headings) as signposts for the readers. (Each section can include several paragraphs.)
Your essay should provide evidence of substantial reading of relevant academic journal articles, academic books or book chapters that supports its main points, not present your own opinions.
2. Formatting requirements for the assignment Your assignment should be presented in a reader-friendly way: • be a MSWord document (a .doc, or .docx format or pdf; NO other format is accepted) • no long paragraphs (approx. 250 words maximum), or no very short paragraphs (one or two short sentences unless it is a connecting sentence between two sections) • 1.5 spaced, 2.5 cm margins • 12pt font size, Times New Roman • have page numbers consecutively in the footer
• include your name and ID in the header • use headings to help make the structure of your assignment clearer.

3. Sources and citation requirements a) Within the body of your essay, every source you have drawn upon must be accurately cited using in-text citations (NOT footnotes) following the Deakin Harvard referencing style: www.deakin.edu.au/referencing. • Remember that for all direct quotes you must provide page numbers in addition to the author and year. • See more information on the Harvard referencing style in the ASSIGNMENT RESOURCES subfolder 6.1 Referencing and plagiarism on the unit site in CloudDeakin. b) Full details of all sources referred to in-text must be included in your Reference List, and must be correctly formatted using the Deakin Harvard referencing style. c) You can use other academic references such as book, book chapters or peer reviewed journal articles which are available from Deakin University Library online databases (e.g., Business Source Premier, ABI Inform, Emerald Management Plus, or Science Direct) d) Note that Wikipedia, answers.com, general websites and other personal opinion or social networking websites are NOT accepted. Assignments that cite these websites will be penalised. e) Note that lecture slides are NOT counted as an academic reference so if you want to use the information on slides, you need to track down the original source and reference it properly as all the ideas on the slides come from the readings or citations outlined in the slides.
