• What is the value of studying the humanities in the field of health professions?

Understanding is an essential component of providing patients with care as a health professional. This comprehension takes into account the patient’s and the caregiver’s shared beliefs, experiences, prejudices, cultures, and preferences, all of which affect how they perceive the circumstance they are in right now. Our Week One lecture highlights three crucial benefits of studying the humanities in healthcare: it improves patient comprehension, raises awareness of preconceived notions, and raises awareness of moral dilemmas, the capacity for critical analysis, and fosters empathy (Chamberlain, 2022). Understanding my patient’s values, life experiences, and culture is essential for me in my role as a pre-operative nurse so that I can make them feel comfortable and safe while under my care and the care of their doctor.

• How might a topic such as art, literature, music, dance, etc. from other time periods enhance your career and personal life in the present?

Our patients frequently lose fingers or the use of an arm that is essential to their survival and capacity to support their families. Several people have never undergone surgery or been “put to sleep.” Many people’s attitudes towards surgery, how they perceive and feel about pain and painkillers, and how they should be treated after surgery are all influenced by their cultural backgrounds.

Because I firmly think that we may learn from the past and the experiences of others, I can improve my personal and professional life in the present by understanding humanities from earlier eras, such as art, literature, music, or dance. Perspective is one of the most fascinating things about being a human.

Ethics and heritage, traditions, and history are two facets of the humanities, according to the National Endowment for the Humanities (2022). I believe that ethics is an aspect that I feel greatly influences my personal and professional life. In regard to my personal life, I aim to conduct myself in a manner that is ethical and would cause no harm, physically, emotionally, cognitively, or spiritually toward others. In my professional work, I feel that understanding the history, customs, and legacy is important for delivering compassionate and culturally appropriate treatment. This is in addition to being ethical. There are many different cultures and backgrounds among those of us who work in Indianapolis.
