Observation
Site: classroom 9th &10th grade
Date/Time of Observation:
Start: 10:00 a.m.
End: 11:15 a.m.
Date: 11-03-2015
i. The classroom setting:
– The classroom included a total of 14 students(four boys and ten girls).
ii. Warm-up activities:
– Teacher took greeted the students and took their attendance.
– Teacher distributed worksheets for reviewing the previous lesson and check students’
comprehension.
iii. Content delivery:
– Teacher delivered the content with confidence and in a well-organized manner.
– She spoke clearly and she used appropriate assistive technology in the class.
– She circulated around the room and provided assistance to students.
– She used meaningful, relevant and appropriate activities.
– Visual aids and graphic organizers were also used to assist comprehension
– Overall, teacher demonstrated supportive relationships with all students; and showed
interest in individual students.
The Context:
There was a strong and apparent evidence of students’ involvement in the learning process. The assistive technology, the theme of the lesson, the activities, and the supplemental materials all enhanced learning. As well as they created an active and productive learning; and helped meet the objectives. The topic “music” was compelling and relevant to students’ lives; therefore, students were fully engaged in the entire class. In this field notes, I will analyze several key elements that played an important role in delivering the lesson effectively.
The Content:
The instructor showed enthusiasm and interest in the topic; and she introduced it in an interesting way (e.g., students used instruments to play music). The objectives were shared with the students (e.g., the impact of technology on music). The pace of the lesson was appropriate to students’ level and needs. Besides, the instructor made appropriate use of technology (iPads) as an instructional support. She also used a variety of appropriate techniques to maintain student engagement, interest and attentiveness (e.g., playing music, discussion questions, using iPads, one-to-one activity and teacher-directed activity). The lesson flowed from simple to complex. First, students used musical instruments. Then they played music on iPads, which was much more complex than using the instruments. After that, they found information on the effect of technology on music; and they shared their findings with the class. Overall, the lesson integrated the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) effectively. In addition, the lesson allowed students to make meaningful connections between their own knowledge and the new information that being taught.
The Process:
The instructor asked questions to engage and draw students’ attention (e.g., in one word, how do you feel after using the instrument? Does technology impact music? How?) The questions assessed students’ understanding and provoked high level thinking. Even more, students became more independent learners; and they developed their cognitive skills, which could be applied across content areas. The instructor also provided support to help students with difficulties. Moreover, incorporating technology in the lesson helped erase obstacles that hinder students from performing their best. Overall, I believe students reached the teacher’s expectations successfully.
Comments:
Through my observation I noticed that only one student seemed reluctant to participate with his classmates; and he withdrew himself from the activities. My initial reaction was the student was uncooperative; when in fact, his special needs were the reason behind his behavior. However, he seemed willing to participate in the one-to-one activity; in which he felt more comfortable and safer. Even though the classroom environment was safe and positive, I think some students — especially with special needs or learning difficulties — need more time to be fully engaged.
I came to realize how important to recognize students with disabilities or learning difficulties and provide assistance and support as needed. It is also important to allow instructions and assessment modifications to provide equal access to the content and ensure that the student’s disability does not interfere and prevent his/ her success; and therefore they achieve better results and meet our expectations. Equally important is bridging the gap between my students and I in order to promote mutual trust and respect.
What caught my attention the most was how to integrate the assistive technology effectively. Moreover, the lesson stepped away from the traditional method and adopted the inquiry method characteristics in which students think, investigate, explore and seek answers. They also deal with relevant, meaningful and interesting topics and issues. Hence, learners play a significant role in their own learning and participate in the whole process.
All in all, observing these key elements was a great opportunity. The whole experience was interesting and provided a snapshot of how to manage a classroom effectively. As well as how to meet my students’ needs through using appropriate assistive technology, innovative, authentic, interesting and active materials and topics. Equally important is creating a safe and positive environment in which students can learn, and better yet, be productive; and help them achieve the ultimate goal
This Interview transcript with interview protocol
Interviewer: Student
Interviewee: Teacher
Interview Setting: Interview conducted in office of teacher. The interview was conducted at 01:30 PM on Monday afternoon.
Interviewer: From your experience how you would define “technology integration” in the classroom.
Interviewee: Using technology in the classroom in order to allow students to learn content and show their understanding of content. In addition, students can learn how to solve different kinds of problems by themselves.
Interviewer: What are your roles as a teacher in a classroom integrates technology?
Interviewee: As a teacher, I need to choose the appropriate tools that related to the lesson and be aware how to use them effectively. Also, I always look for new ways to facilitate using technology tools ,and I have to relate the technology use in the classroom with technology use outside the classroom ,such as homework. In addition, I have to ensure that all students achieve strong academic achievement.
Interviewer: How does integrating technology in the classroom enhance teaching?
Using technology tools in the classroom is very useful for both students and teachers to meet the demands of student-centered learning. Technology tools can support main practices of student-centered learning and help me to create new learning activities . For example, I can advise students, assess individual students strengths and weakness, and present the lesson in different ways. In addition, technology has been integrated in curriculum-based approaches to personalize learning which is a great thing.
Interviewee: How does technology meet the demands of student- centered learning ?
Interviewee: Several schools have been created that use student-centered learning
approaches to prepare students to face the demands of the world economy. Technology can meet the demands of student- centered learning by increasing their awareness and adding more educational experiences to them. It helps them to enhance technology skills, self- direction, and communication and improve their cognitive skills such as thinking, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, and research. In addition, it give opportunities for students to participate deeply in issues and questions and to express their knowledge and opinions that support the development of their skills and contribute to their sense of themselves. For instance, as you saw in the observation, students used musical instruments and then they played music on iPads . After that, they found information on the impact of technology on music; and they shared their results with each other in the class.
Interviewer: How do you think technology impact students with disabilities?
Interviewee: In a positive way actually, technology devices allow disabled students to feel comfortable and more successful in the classroom, which are main elements of any successful learning environment. Disabled students often struggle with some skills such as reading, writing, and organizing information. Using suitable technology devices can make materials easier, allow disabled students to feel a sense of accomplishment ,and increase classroom participation.
Interviewer: Is the increased use of technology having any negative effect on students? (Explain)
Interviewee: Yes. Along with the positive impacts of using technology in the class, there are also negative effects on students. For instance, when students have iPads or cell phones in their classrooms, they are going on social networking websites and playing their games instead of listening the lessons. Also, students can find the answers to questions easily. So, they are just repeating information instead of learning the concept of the lesson. I’m not advocating cutting out using technology in the class, but moderation is best.
Interviewer: Thank you for all these useful and interesting information. I don’t have any questions at this stage. Are there any other things would you like to add/ share?
Interviewee: Yes
Interviewer: Well, go ahead
Interviewee: The teacher should be trained on how best to use the technology. Also, reliable internet access to use these technology tools.
Note:
The emergent themes in my analysis are ” use of technology with disabled students is very useful”, ” lack of technology and the digital devices in some school districts”.
