There were three members on the team which provided helpdesk support, Donna, Kirk and Ashley. All three individuals were new to the organization. Donna and Kirk were hired only two weeks before Ashley. None of them had previously worked on a team or been in a leadership role before. However, Donna became the team leader shortly after. She had made this request to the department manager .When the team was first joined, Donna was very nice to both Kirk and Ashley. She extended invitations to both members for lunch and other non-work related activities. Sometimes Kirk would accept Donna’s offer, but Ashley always declined. Shortly thereafter, her attitude towards Ashley shifted negatively. She began to be completely disrespectful to her. Ashley started only to speak to her when it was required for work. Donna wouldn’t always respond to her. Even worse, when she did respond, she would have a nasty tone in her voice or say something inappropriate. To say the least, this woman was not professional and had no business being the team lead. The relationship took a toll on everyone around and made Ashley not want to report to work. The productivity also suffered greatly because of the strained relationship. The team wasn’t able to brainstorm and come up with more efficient solutions for daily tasks.
Eventually, Ashley asked Donna if she could speak to her about it. Donna told her that she was too upset with her to talk. Little did either of them know, the department manager was on the other side of the cubicle and listening to everything. The manager took the team lead outside for a talk. After that day, Donna’s attitude improved, but the energy was still negative. In this situation, the team is suffering because neither the leader nor the department manager knows how to improve communications and relationship on the team. Neither of them were being proactive with trying to come up with a plan, training or other method for improving the relationship among the team members.
