The final project for this course is the creation of a research paper and matrix focusing on management styles and tools that can be used in today’s correctional environment and climate.
As you look to apply concepts from this course to your role as a corrections manager, you will find it is sometimes challenging to translate theory and research into practice. The research paper and matrix provides you with an opportunity to synthesize course concepts as they relate to your career in corrections management. You will assume your choice of role as a corrections supervisor, describe a problem currently facing your workplace, and apply what you have learned about leadership and communication, ethics, and law and legislation to develop an effective managerial philosophy to implement into your practice.
This project is divided into four milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Four, Five, Seven, and Ten.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Describe a problem of practice affecting the current field of corrections management.
a. State your chosen corrections management role.
b. Identify a problem of practice affecting the current field of corrections management.
c. Create a thesis statement that explains how implementing a managerial philosophy as a corrections supervisor will improve this problem of practice.
II. Develop an effective managerial philosophy for working in the correctional setting. An effective managerial philosophy should include considerations of best practices in leadership and communication techniques, ethical practice, and pertinent law and legislation dealing with supervisory practice in the correctional facility as well as your own personal supervisory style.
a. Describe various styles of leadership and communication techniques used in the correctional setting.
b. Assess which styles of leadership and communication techniques succeed in the correctional setting.
c. Evaluate how personal dispositions can shape supervisory style.
d. Describe your personal supervisory style and personal disposition.
e. Explain how your personal disposition has shaped your supervisory style.
f. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your personal supervisory style.
g. Synthesize effective leadership styles, communication techniques, and your own personal supervisory style to develop an effective managerial philosophy for working in the correctional setting.
III. Describe the applications of your managerial philosophy to your work as a corrections manager.
a. Identify an ethical dilemma common in the correctional facility related to your problem of practice.
b. Conduct an analysis of an ethical dilemma common in the correctional facility related to your problem of practice.
c. Explain how your managerial philosophy will prepare you to navigate an ethical dilemma common in the correctional facility related to your problem of practice.
d. Identify pertinent laws and legislation related to your problem of practice affecting the field of corrections management.

IV. Create a functional organizational matrix chart that manifests your managerial philosophy.
a. Identify your chosen corrections management role.
b. Use the left side of the matrix to break down the duties of your supervisory role (planning, organizing, etc.).
c. Use the right side of the matrix to break down the domains of your supervisory role (policies, operations, etc.).
d. Fill in each location in the grid of your matrix to explain how you will implement your managerial philosophy to fulfill each duty as it relates to a corresponding domain.
