Hello,
This paper includes THREE articles that you need to write about, a page for each article which I will provide here:
https://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/2004/jun/sedaris/usandthem.html
Directions:
In the first paragraph of your reading response, mention the title, author, and main thesis of “Us and Them.”
Here is a sample first sentence:
In David Sedaris’s essay “Us and Them,” he shows us how, as a child, he participated in the dominant culture of consumerism and viewed the rest of the world through the lenses he had acquired by watching a lot of television.
Then connect to the Text by answering one or more of the following:
What does the text have to do with you, personally, and with your life (past, present or future)?
How does this essay relate to some other work you have read?
How much does the text agree or clash with your view of the world, and what you consider right and wrong?
What did you learn, and how much were your views and opinions challenged or changed by this text, if at all?
How well does the text address things that you, personally, care about and consider important to the world?
What can you praise about the text? What problems did you have with it?
How well did you enjoy the text (or not) as entertainment or as a work of art?
What is your overall reaction to the text?
But remember, this is an essay, not a series of short answer questions and answers.
NOTE: The above is the instructions for the first article. And, below is the links for the other two articles + their instructions which they both have the same instructions.

In your first sentence, state the title of the essay you are summarizing and the name of the author (the title should be surrounded by quotes and correctly capitalized). Also state the main point of the essay (the thesis). You may quote the thesis directly from the essay or write it in your own words. Next, include several sentences that explain the main points of the essay and brief summaries of some of the examples used to support the points. The summary should be five to ten sentences long.
For the response, start with a topic sentence that sums up your response to the essay (how you connected with it or did not connect with it and why, whether you liked it or not and why, which memories or associates it called up for you, whether it was insightful, interesting, disturbing, etc.). Then include several sentences that describe how or why the essay caused this response in you.
Thank you.
