In constructing your evaluation of the text, you need to do the following:

• Access the “Blueprint for Evaluation of Argumentative Essays” This tells you EXACTLY how to format your essay.
• Evaluate your text. DO NOT merely summarize and DO NOT argue for or against the issue presented in the text you analyze.
• Your essay must be double-spaced, a minimum of 3 pages in length, excluding the Works Cited page, (Times New Roman, 12 pt. font) and include an original/creative title (no title page, please).

-BLUEPRINT FOR Evaluation of an Argumentative Essay
Introduction
1. Context: In the first 3-4 sentences of your introduction, state the general context of the essay under consideration. Set up the context by giving some background on the issue. Do not mention the author or the title yet. You could describe a “case” (like a friend who spends a lot buying bottled water because he/she thinks it is better than tap water OR a description of a family who does not have access to water. OR you could give some information (statistics or shocking facts) about the actual amount of water that is drinkable). There are other ways to begin, but do not begin with some general “fluffy babbling.”

2. Claim: State the author’s claim in a way that tells your readers about your judgment of whether or not the author has succeeded in making this claim credible. In “insert title of article,” the author (be sure to name the author) claims (or seeks to, demonstrates, explains, etc). <–Use this sentence structure for your claim.

3. Forecast: Predict the methods you will discuss that the author uses to convince or persuade his/her readers that his/her claim is valid. (You must discuss evidence utilizing at least 3 of the following methods: logic, supporting evidence, writing style, tone, length of article.) This sentence predicts the organization—the analytical paragraphs that you will write and the exact order you will write them. See example thesis statements below:

• Although (insert author’s name) uses logic, statistics, and an academic writing style to support his argument, he ultimately fails to prove that bottled water is better than tap water. [Note: This thesis tells readers that the writer does not believe the author has proven his claim. There will be one body paragraph that discusses logic, one body paragraph that discusses statistics, and one body paragraph that discusses academic writing style. Then there will be a concluding paragraph.]

• (Insert author’s name) uses strong logic, statistics, and a trustworthy academic writing style to support his argument that bottled water is better than tap water. [Note: This thesis tells readers that the writer believes the author did a good job in proving his claim. There will be one body paragraph that discusses logic, one body paragraph that discusses statistics, and one body paragraph that discusses academic writing style. Then there will be a concluding paragraph.]

• Although (insert author’s name) utilized a formal academic writing style and strong statistics, his logic is weak when he argues that bottled water is better than tap water. [Note: This is a mixed thesis statement. The writer believes the author did a good job with the writing style and statistics, but the author failed when it came to use of logic. There will still be one body paragraph that discusses writing style, one body paragraph that discusses statistics, and one body paragraph that discusses logic. Then there will be a concluding paragraph.]

Supporting Paragraph 1 (Should have a minimum of 8 sentences)

1. TOPIC sentence (with keyword) … logic [Note: I simply utilize the first topic I mention in my thesis statement above.]

2. 2 points of support: Provide evidence from the essay to show how the author uses this method to enhance his argument. Discuss specific places in the essay where the author uses logic (show at least 2 places). If you are arguing that the author does not use logic effectively, you still need to provide 2 examples of evidence to support your argument.

3. So what? ( Provide 3- 4 sentences that describe the impact of this strategy — as it helps (or hurts) the purpose of the argument). Use the KEY word: Logic (or whatever the specific criteria is that you are discussing). Talk about the specific effect of the logic on the audience, the credibility of this logic, and whether or not it actually supports the claim sufficiently or not.

Supporting Paragraph 2 (Should have a minimum of 8 sentences)

1. TOPIC sentence (with keyword) … statistics [Note: I simply utilize the second topic I mention in my thesis statement above.]
