Authorship Attribution (1) – A case of Plagiarism?
The extracts below (consists of part A and B) are two samples taken from two stories. Extract A is taken from a story by Mr. A. Fable and Extract B is taken from Mrs. Unknown.
Mrs. Unknown was accused of ‘borrowing’ her story from that of Mr. A. Fable. Are the similarities enough to suggest plagiarism? Applying the relevant methods and models from the module, perform an analysis of the two samples, define all theoretical and analytical terms, and discuss your findings and the aims of such analysis within the broader context of forensic discourse where relevant.
A: A FATHER, being on the point of death, wished to be sure that his sons would give the same attention to his farm as he himself had given it. He called them to his bedside and said, “My sons, there is a great treasure hid in one of my vineyards.” The sons, after his death, took their spades and mattocks and carefully dug over every portion of their land. They found no treasure, but the vines repaid their labour by an extraordinary and superabundant crop.
B: One day a man who had two sons was at the point of death. He wanted to ensure his sons would be attentive to his farm and his lands and give it the due care that he had given it. He beckoned them to his bedside and said, “My sons, there is a vast treasure hidden in one of my fields.” After he died, the sons took their spades and pitchforks and cautiously dug up all of their land. They found no treasure, but their labour was repaid by a fabulous and abundant crop.
