Assignment 2
Project – Artefact and Exegesis
— This assignment is comprised of two parts an ARTEFACT and an EXEGESIS that together should be 1500 words, or its equivalent.
For this assignment students are required to:
1) select one of the topics below and to develop an artefact using a relevant medium
2) explain the conceptual thinking that led to the artefact in relation to relevant theories of communication and the media. This explanation is the exegesis.
The artefact may be presented as:-
A work of creative non-fiction (using the first person)
A creative piece of writing (poem, story, script)
A short video or animation suitable for uploading to YouTube or Vimeo
A short audio work suitable for use as a podcast or broadcast
A short multi-media presentation
A promotional campaign portfolio
An advertising poster
A photo-journalist account, with accompanying text
Any other original presentation, as negotiated with your tutor e.g. song, dance, website, etc .
In the ARTEFACT, regardless of the medium used, work that is not your own e.g. music, images, etc, should be clearly acknowledged and authorship should be attributed in the assignment reference and bibliography lists.
The explanatory written component (EXEGESIS) should refer to relevant theories and concepts as introduced and discussed in the course. It should at least 750 words with in-text citation of work by other authors excluded from the word count and amounting to no more than 500 words in total, giving a maximum word count of 1,250. The final word count may vary by plus or minus 10%.
Substantial additional background research is required to produce a well-executed and clearly articulated project that demonstrates understanding of the relevant communication and media perspectives and the use of relevant theoretical positions. There should be a minimum of eight references. All references should be scholarly, and unless seminal or class texts in the field, preferably recent i.e. no more than 7 years old.
References to websites, blogs, Wikipedia and other un-refereed sources will not be ‘counted’ as relevant.
In addition to the artefact, students should include and submit: a REFERENCE list showing all references cited in the assignment AND, a BIBLIOGRAPHY showing all relevant research material consulted in the research process. Please use the Harvard Referencing style.
