If exegesis involves bringing the original meaning out of the text, then how do we apply that text
to ourselves, and the lives of our listeners? This is the task of hermeneutics. Exegesis involves
mining out the correct meaning. Hermeneutics involves correctly applying that meaning to the
lives of our listeners today.

Ezra may be one of those underappreciated figures of the OT. He walked on the stage during a
difficult period of Israel’s history, performed his role well, and walked off. One of the more
telling portions of OT scripture describing him is found in Ezra 7:10:-
10 For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the LORD, and to
teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.
There are 3 values about Ezra that emerge from the text:
1. He took seriously the study of the Law
2. He observed the Law for himself
3. He taught its decrees and laws to his people
