Goals
Now that we’ve experimented with examining social and rhetorical situations as well as elements of criticism and memoir, and we have worked to involve ourselves and our minds more directly with the world around us, we’re ready to start applying these skills and attitudes to our most immediate environment/society/community: Emerson. You have considered, explored, scrutinized, and linked yourself to parts of society at large, now what (else) about Emerson do you believe could benefit from your thought and perspective? What should we, as fellow citizens of this community, consider more thoroughly?
Requirements
First, you should determine a broad, and then specific concern regarding Emerson to observe, dissect, and somehow intervene.
With this observation, consider why you might engage this kind of cultural criticism, to whom you are likely speaking, and how your writing might cause something concrete on the reader’s side. Be sure to seek out other perspectives, in articles, essays, media, people, etc., and as you refer/discuss/dissect those perspectives, negotiate your own stance. By the end of your piece, just as has been the case with our recent readings, you should engage your reader, maybe even persuade them to act/think/speak in a way that you have determined (through this project) is necessary for our Emerson community. This project will ask you to shift your perspective and writing motivations in the interest of a social or political end. This is as immediate and urgent as any political writing.
As ever, you must pay close attention to how you build your essay (beginning, proposition, structure/rhythm, critical dissection, ending, voice, presentation of ideas and evidence, etc.).
I was thinking of talking about the rampant use of Adderall or drugs on students in Emerson and Boston, and how it is not good for health, or student life in general.
The paper is supposed to be 6 pages- double spaced, but it does not give that option. But 4 pages is also okay.
