second written assignment is a short paper (1250–1750 words) that analyzes form and content of a single work of art from the period we study in class.
Choose something from an area museum (LACMA and Pasadena’s Norton Simon Museum are your best options; our library’s Special Collections dept. has a wonderful selection of Kathe Kollwitz prints you can work from, as well. The work you choose must date between 1900 and 1945.
As I mentioned to you in class, we are very lucky to have a great show that relates to our material in town. LACMA currently has New Objectivity show on view, and it is a great source for choosing a work relevant to our class.
Start out by reading “Analytical Thinking” and “Formal Analysis and Style” chapters from Sylvan Barnet’s books (recommended on the syllabus). If you don’t have access to a hard copy version, here is a link to pdf of what you need to read:
The text comes with instructions on how to analyze an artwork, and how to write a formal analysis. There are also sample essays for you to see, so you know what yours should look like.
After you are done reading Barnet, take notes on what you will be looking for when you pick the painting (or sculpture) you want to work with. These should look something like the worksheet below. Make sure you have as much detail as you can, when you take notes at the museum (remember to bring pencils to take notes, they might not allow pens).
