Task
Discuss your understanding of qualitative and quantitative methods; use examples from research reports/studies to highlight how these different methods approach social issues. For this essay you are expected to reference various sources.
Rationale
The set word length provides an indicator of the expectations regarding depth and breadth of coverage of the topic. It is always a challenge to concisely present the essence of what you have learned from reading several sources. Although you should attempt to stay within the word limit you may go over or under by 10%Task: Discuss your understanding of qualitative and quantitative methods; use examples from research reports/studies to highlight how these different methods approach social issues. For this essay you are expected to reference various sources.
Length: 1500 words (you may go over or under by 10% you will need to carefully work out how aspect of the question may require (cognisant of the fact each aspect of the question needs to be equally and fully addressed).
Please note: Carefully read and understand the question. It would help to have an understanding of key instruction words – for example discuss – (in which case you would need to consider more than one point of view, arguing for against the main ideas and in the end offer a conclusion). To help you to better understand the meaning of some of these key instruction words, please refer to the ‘Common Instruction words list’ that I have attached for you on i2 site in ‘Resources’.
Tips:
To help you successfully complete this assignment, you need to address all the marking criteria requirements as outlined in the marking rubric.
In answering the assignment task, you need to attempt addressing the following:
Evidence of understanding research methods:
➢ You will need to highlight the ideas, concepts and principles of each of the two methodologies – qualitative and quantitative methods – discussing limitations/disadvantages and strengths and limitations.
➢ You will need to include in your discussion, examples of reports/research articles or studies that are distinctly qualitative and qualitative and highlight how these different methods approach social issues. Please note: In selecting your examples, you would need to choose that are distinctly either Qualitative and/or Qualitative – being mindful that there are some studies which uses both methods – which in this case is NOT what the assignment task is looking for. So, I will repeat, in citing reports/studies in your examples, you the ones which are either exclusively Qualitative or Quantitative in nature. In order to help you identify DISTINCTLY Qualitative or Qualitative reports/studies, you could refer to the Library Search techniques posted in ‘Resources’ by Sarah from our Library. Or please contact the Library (with contact details and availability on CSU website).
➢ In your discussion of the examples, it would be helpful to highlight those ideas, concepts and principles that demonstrate a differentiation of the two methods e.g. one study may have utilized in-depth interviews (qualitative) in contrast to the opposite study which may have used surveys or questionnaires (quantitative). Again, you could offer you critique for or against each of these two different studies’ methodological approaches in terms of strengths (advantages) or limitations (disadvantages).
Evidence of relevant reading within and beyond the material provided:
➢ The expectation for this assignment is that you reference various sources. Please make sure your citations are scholarly and acceptable academic references. It would help if you use subject reading materials and beyond which are appropriate and relevant to the topic.
All aspects of the question have been addressed:
➢ As outlined in this criterion, ALL the aspects of the question need to be fully addressed. In order for you to appropriately answer this task, you obviously need to first understand the key concepts to the question. You will notice, on page 1 above, I have attempted to use bold letters so that I can highlight for you key aspects (including instruction words) to pay special attention to –but you might want to do this differently – which is completely fine too.
Clarity of structure, written expression and presentation and correct citation and referencing:
Evidence of clear and precise statement will help you successfully address this assignment criterion. Also, it is important that your referencing is consistent and in line with the CSU recommended 6th ed, APA standards of referencing. I always encourage students to review the APA guide to make sure referencing standards are in compliance with those of in the guide.
It is always good to edit your work to correct minor grammatical, punctuation and spelling mistakes which often tend to ‘hide’ and only be ‘detected’ by proofreading.
Your assignment need to be logical with a consistent structure. In order words, one should be able to follow the flow of your paper with ease – starting with an introduction (which would normally outline to the reader, your discussion in the paper). Correspondingly, a conclusion (which would normally wrap-up your discussion of key points to your paper) should be provided at the end. We wouldn’t expect ANY new ideas to come up the conclusion – rather, a summary of what is already discussed in the body of your essay).
Reference list should be provided for your essay. ALL in-text citations/references need to be reflected in the Reference list. Ultimately, the heading should read References (PLEASE NOTE: neither bullet points nor use of the heading ‘Bibliography or Reference List’ is required).
