in each question put the same idea but with other words.
2. Describe Connie’s sister June. Consider the significance of the fact that she is living at home and she is steady.
Connie’s sister was 24 years old. June was the secretary of Connie’s high school, so Connie has to hear all the time her mother’s complaint and her sister’s complaint. In contrast of Connie, June does something in her house to help her mother, things like, to save money for the house, to cook, to clean, etc. Moreover, Connie’s sister is a simple girl that does not care about an excessive makeup, extravagant clothing, to spend an entire day to wash her hair and likes to go to quiet places and family events. At last, in the lecture when it is mention that June was steady that means that June is focus on things that really matters, not only about beauty, of being better than anyone, or caring only about her hair, that also June is a strong person, firm and sane, that is not easy to change her routine.
15. Why is Arnold’s name significant? His age and appearance.
Arnold’s name is significant because is the first guy that tells Connie to go for a ride, also his friend is the one who obligate Connie to go for a ride, and his age and appearance is important too because he looks like a person of thirty years and Connie does not recognize him. However, if Arnold appears like an eighteen year old boy she may be go with him for a ride.
23. Arnold implies that Connie can protect their family from harm if she were to go with him. How does this contribute to the meaning of the history?
This gives a prove that Arnold does not have good intentions with Connie, because if she does not want to go out with him that is fine it does not have to be mandatory no one has to obligate her, but he is putting it harder, because he is forcing her, she is going out of the house yes or yes, and Arnold uses to harm her family as an excuse.
28. Why is it significant that she is “moving out the sunlight” into the “vast reaches of land on all sides of him – so much land that Connie had never seen before and did not recognize except to know that she was going to it.” Is she in danger? Why or why not? What does this vast expanse represent?
That is an important data that will help the reader to guess what will happen in the story. I consider that she may be in danger, because according to Connie she does not know those guys and Arnold’s friend knows everything about her, and first of all that is not a good sign, because that means that he was following every Connie’s step and that what predators do. However, is Connie does not know him, he is not part of his family or friends, that means that he does not has a good purpose for her. Moreover, in the story there is a part that said if Connie does not go away of her house when her mother, father, and sister come Arnold’s friend and his friend will do something bad to Connie’s family, so that is another sign of not having good intentions with Connie. However, the vast expanse represent that Arnold’s friend is taking her to an unknown place, far away of his family, where nobody can know about her, the only thing that was sure about that vast expanse was that Connie was going through it with a guy that she has never meet before.
29. So what happens to Connie? Why do you think Oates left the ending ambiguous?
Connie was kidnapped, she had to leave her house in a mandatory form and Oates left the ending ambiguous because in that way can attract the reader. In this case nobody knows how the end will be, everyone can conceive one thing depending on the context, and an unknown ending is something that let the reader in doubt, so that makes that everyone wants to know if they are right or not of what they think and wants to know what really will happen, so the people will bet the author to finish the story or to write a second part.
