I consider that she may be in danger, because according to Connie she does not know those guys and Arnold’s friend knows everything about her, and first of all that is not a good sign, because that means that he was following every Connie’s step and that what predators do. However, is Connie does not know him, he is not part of his family or friends, that means that he does not has a good purpose for her. Moreover, in the story there is a part that said if Connie does not go away of her house when her mother, father, and sister come Arnold’s friend and his friend will do something bad to Connie’s family, so that is another sign of not having good intentions with Connie. However, the vast expanse represent that Arnold’s friend is taking her to an unknown place, far away of his family, where nobody can know about her, the only thing that was sure about that vast expanse was that Connie was going through it with a guy that she has never meet before.
29. So what happens to Connie? Why do you think Oates left the ending ambiguous?
Connie was kidnapped, she had to leave her house in a mandatory form and Oates left the ending ambiguous because in that way can attract the reader. In this case nobody knows how the end will be, everyone can conceive one thing depending on the context, and an unknown ending is something that let the reader in doubt, so that makes that everyone wants to know if they are right or not of what they think and wants to know what really will happen, so the people will bet the author to finish the story or to write a second part.
