The First Step Towards Success in any occupation is to become interested in it.-William Osler
Why Dentistry?
Dentistry has been in my family since day one. I now have a everlasting passion for the dental science. This passion was not instilled within me from the beginning, rather, the burning passion grew from a small ember in my childhood. I was in 1st grade when my Teacher Mr. Faulker asked the class to draw a picture of what they want to be when they grow up. Instantly my mind started sparking and firing off various ideas. Out of the one’s I can remember an Astronaut, Painter, Lawyer, and a Dentist. I crayoned an awkward face with a giant smile (yellow teeth) and a hand piece with a bur directed at a tooth. I presented my masterpiece to the class explaining that Dentist are like Doctors for your teeth and they are cool people. I suppose not many of my peers found my choice amusing but till this day I have reserved the original picture. Now this instance was only the spark of my interest. Throughout my life I observed people of all types of professions with many different jobs and desires. I was always interested in the medical field and helping people would be the ultimate goal. My Father and two Uncle’s were My dentists growing up. So the field was always an option for me. It wasn’t till i was 17 when I had an terrible accident, which lead to another epiphany. I got slammed High School football game and fractured my zygomatic arch and cracked my orbital floor. It was a horrible accident and I thought I would never look the same. First I consulted a plastic surgeon who took me through the procedure and explained the outcomes. The second Doctor I met was Dr.Bloomquist an astounding oral surgeon I say this because he saved my face. Everything about this Doctor was very trustworthy. He was very experienced and explained the surgery in a logistic manner. His Professional demeanor really inspired me to pursue my dental career. My surgery was successful and my once collapse cheek was reconstructed. After my surgery i had to go for recall and I informed the Doctor that I was interested in pursuing the Dental field, he told me it was a wonderful idea and explained to me the process.
What are you doing now?
I am currently working part-time as a Dental Assistant in the Seattle area. I am gaining a lot of knowledge and experience. My mentors are constantly emphasizing on practicing my patient management skills. Not only how to make the patient comfortable but to educate the patient on procedures both operatively and post operative. The doctors I work with are well reputed in the Seattle area and they show immense skills. I have assisted various procedures such as implants, bone grafts, periodontal surgeries, endodontic treatment, exodontia and other conservative treatments. Other tasks are to sterilize instruments and sanitize operating rooms. This helps me practice the high standard of dental work practiced here in the United States. I am now also educated on new materials and techniques used by Doctors here. Although I also know that every Doctor has a different treatment plan and different materials they prefer.
