INTRODUCTION AND ALIGNMENT
This exercise is intended to lead the student in explaining the results of mishandling the Word.
In other words, it explores the ramifications when one does not rightly divide the Word, via
exegesis and hermeneutics.
Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:
Explain the results of mishandling the Word.
RESOURCES
An evangelical church history text from the internet, book, periodical, or other source
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Unfortunately, the history of the Church is checkered with those who have mishandled the Word
of God in their attempts at Gospel communication. Sometimes, it was ignorance. The offender
simply did not know better, walking in the light they had, dimmed as it was. For others in church history, their motive may have been more sinister.
Perhaps they had an imbalanced doctrinal agenda
Perhaps they were motivated by money
Perhaps they were motivated by a quest for power
Perhaps it was just plain ego
In some instances, great damage has been done by those who, willingly or ignorantly, have not
handled the Word correctly in their preaching and teaching whatever their motivation. Those
among us who do not learn from the darker parts of church history may very well repeat those
parts. This exercise is designed to help you understand the results of mishandling the Word.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Do a brief internet search of heretical preaching, false doctrine, poor exegesis or
hermeneutics, etc. You may want to consult a polemics (cults) text. You may also want
to consult an evangelical historical theology or church history text. As an alternative, you
may wish to deal with a biblical character (in either the OT or NT) that was trafficking in
false doctrine, or some kind of aberrant message.
2. Survey the ministry of one who has not practiced good exegesis, making the text say
something it never was meant to say to the first audience, or today’s audience, for that
matter.
3. In a 1 page document, share the results of your research, describing the damage that
was done as a result of a lack of correct handling of the Word.
4. This exercise may involve something that happened in the Bible, church history, or it
may be as current as the latest false teaching coursing the internet. The choice is yours.
5. Submit in Word document.
