Assignment: Choose one of the primary sources and one of the secondary sources of information that you have chosen to use for your project. If it is a source that you used previously you will have already evaluated and analyzed it so the next step is to decide the ‘story’ that the source tells you – about your question.
Include:
Your research question – it may be the same one you selected at the beginning of the project or if you have made a different choice since then, include only the question you will use for the final project.
Which sources you are evaluating – you MUST include the text excerpt or image of the relevant portions. Do not include an entire article or book chapter or refer to the article or book – pull the relevant portion out and include it in this assignment.
For each source:
1. Answer the following question: What “story” does my source tell me about my specific question?
2. Explain why that is the story with examples from the source.
3. Be sure to clearly state what portion of the story is unequivocally stated/depicted in the source and which is inferred by you as the historian.
Learner Outcomes: The goal of this assignment is for you to distinguish carefully between information that comes literally from the source and that which is a personal interpretation and to create a ‘story’ or ‘infer the best explanation’ which best describes the all of that information.
