UNDERSTANDING TASK 3:
A document plan is simply a file that contains all the elements of the document–the skeleton–the bare bones–the outline (but not in formal outline format). . If the project is a technical report, the doc plan will include a transmittal (memo or letter depending on the audience), a title page, a table of contents, a list of tables and figures, an executive summary, the first body page, and at least one additional body pages. The two (or more) body pages will include all the major headings and sub-headings), text introducing a visual and the visual, a references page, and any appendices. The doc plan is the layout of the document but without all the text. Some people use Lorem Ipsum to show how they will control how much text may go in certain spots.
The fore pages will be numbered with lower case Roman numerals (except for the transmittal and title page, which will have no page heading and no page numbers) and starting on the first body page, the pages will have page headers and Arabic numerals for page numbers. Students tend to struggle with page numbering, so correct page numbering is one of the major goals of the document plan assignment.
Each senior project will look and feel different than the others. Each is created for a specific audience and that audience’s expectations, needs, attitudes, and reading conditions will make the document unique. So if you ask your instructor how to format your final project, the answer has to be: It depends! You should, by the time you finished your audience analysis, be sure about what your audience will expect. You should, from having taken the prerequisite courses, know how to create the type of document needed.
You may have to do some research to determine the best document plan for your project. Plan on starting your document plan early and share it in your Study Group. Provide helpful comments to others in your group. While you might all be creating the same kind of document, each one will be unique based on your target audience. Make sure that you can articulate your reasons for all your document plan decisions.
Option 1a Academic Article: See this APA manuscript check list but follow the author’s submission instructions for the specific journal.
Option 1b Grant Proposal: Grant Proposals: Give Me the Money
Option 2a Technical Recommendation Report Technical Reports (many kinds–click on links to see the examples)
Option 2b Business Proposal: Winning Elements of Business Proposals
Option 3 Executive Speech Download this student sample–This is the final (without the mp3 files) that includes the speech and scene setter for the speaker. This view of the final project should spark your creativity for your project’s document plan.
Option 4 Media Kit Your document plan should be a solid draft of your first design, so you may put more time into this task than people doing other options. I have two good examples to share. These examples are in the Handouts conference in your classroom.
Option 5 Feature Story: See this clearly presented details of the Feature Story, and follow the author’s submission guidelines for whatever publication you are writing this for. This option includes so many variables in terms of the media it involves, that this document planning needs to carefully constructed to be what the end product will be: a manuscript for a particular print publication, a web page for a particular online publication, or something else. You main question is this: Who is the publisher and what format does that publisher want from you? .
Option 6 Training Proposal, Training Outline, Training Module. This could be three documents or the training outline might be incorporated into the proposal or the module, depending on your design. The example here is for a proposal, Training examples are linked with the instructions for this option.
Option 7 Instruction Manual. This is new so I do not have current examples to share. I will post some older examples in the classroom in the Handouts conference.
Option 8 Student’s Original Design. You are on your own for this one. Just make the document plan look pretty much what the final will look like, but use some Lorem Ipsum dummy text to fill it out.
