PS 3001 Final Project
For your final project, you will need to do the following:
1. Use a dataset posted in this module.
You can approach this project several ways. You might want to build a model. For example, what explained the vote for Obama in 2008? Or you might want to test a particular hypothesis. For example, does having a lot of manufacturing in a district make it more Democrat?
2. Select one variable from the dataset to be your dependent variable. This is what you are going to model, or what you are going to use as basis for testing the hypothesis.
3. Choose 4 variables to be your independent variables. These variables will be used to build your model, or to create the framework for testing your hypothesis. The strongest papers will use one dummy variable (or more, if you want).
4. Write an explanation of your model, including why you chose the variables that you selected and what you are expecting to find in your regression/hypothesis test.
5. Perform your regression. You should do all the necessary diagnostics, and then arrive at a final model.
6. Write a conclusion explaining what you found, and what it means.
You should hand in (a) a “paper” of several pages that includes the discussion of your research and hypothesis, a table showing your regression results, and a conclusion that explains what you found and what it means and then (b) an annex to show how you did the regression, including your regression results, comments on linearity, outliers and any other issues that need commenting upon, and a summary of your regression diagnostics. You may use the two examples on D2L (“An extended Regression Analysis” and “Multivariate Regression”) as templates for how to work your way through the regression work.
Note that your grade will be based upon the soundness of your regression work but also upon your ability to explain the model/hypothesis that you are proposing, and to understand and communicate what you have found after you have done the regression analysis.
