Consult the in-class handouts and Paper Assignments module for proper citation format. The Word version of the Document Paper 1 assignment sheet has sample footnotes for the Arnesen book that are especially useful for completing this assignment.
Note: History courses such as this one require Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) citations, which is different from MLA or APA citations. MLA or other parenthetical-based citations are NOT acceptable for this assignment or for the Paper assignments for this class.
1. Secondary Source. Select a page from Part I of the Arnesen book, not a page with primary source documents. Make sure it is a page with a lot of text written by the textbook editor, not a page that is a reproduction of a primary source document or list of sources or list of discussion questions. Choose a sentence from that page.
1a. Write or copy the original passage here, word for word.
1b. Write a sentence that uses the quote or parts of the quote. The sentence should be a combination of your words and the quote itself. Be sure that the quoted bits are in quotation marks. At the end of the sentence, add a Chicago style footnote. The footnote number should be “1” (without quotation marks) because it is the first footnote.
1c. Paraphrase the original passage. Put it into your own words, and add a footnote at the end of the sentence. It should be footnote 2. (Hint: it should be the same footnote information as in 1b. You can copy and paste the author, title, etc. into the second footnote to save time if you wish.) It gets footnote number 2 because it is the second footnote in the assignment.
2. Primary Source inside a Secondary Source. Select a page from one of the primary source documents from the Arnesen book, Part II. The page should be a page from a primary source (an historical document, not notes or part of a chapter intro by the editor). Choose a sentence from that page.
2a. Write or copy that original passage here, word for word.
2b. Write a sentence that uses the quote or parts of the quote. The sentence should be a combination of your words and the quote itself. Be sure that the quoted bits are in quotation marks. At the end of the sentence, add a Chicago style footnote. The footnote number should be “3” (without quotation marks) because this is the third footnote of the assignment. Make sure that you use proper citation format — author of the piece, name of the document as it appears in the book, plus the larger book’s information.
2c. Paraphrase the original passage. Put it into your own words, and add a footnote at the end of the sentence. It should be footnote 4. (Hint: it should be the same footnote information as in 2b. You can copy and paste the author, title, etc. into the second footnote.)
