operationalizing a small concrete historical research on the development of manners in early modern England
The purpose if this assessment is to operationalize a small, concrete historical research on the development of manners in early modern England. This implies that students have to make a connection between social theory (Weber, Elias and/or Foucault) and primary sources (empirical evidence). It is important that student use the criteria of source criticism to interpret the text fragments. Students have to make clear which conclusions can be drawn based on the given sources and which statements would be too bold.
Every essay should contain the following elements:
a. Define an appropriate research question that can be answered based on the limited source material.
b. Use some theoretical concepts that fits in with your research question. Use five theoretical concepts from the social sciences (underline these concepts). You can choose from: affectual action, asceticism, biopower, civilizing process, class conflict, discipline, disenchantment, distinction, Fremzwang, individualism, interdependence, market economy, means end rational action, normalization, privatization, Selbstzwang, taboo, value-rational action. Integrate these concepts in your text in such a way that their meaning becomes clear.
c. Introduce your sources in the introduction of your essay and formulate three points of source criticism.
d. Analysis a couple of concrete quotes from your sources and relate them to your research question.
e. You have to find at least one additional secondary source about the evolution of manners in Early Modern England. Refer to this source in your analysis.
f. End your essay with a conclusion. Make sure that your conclusion refers to your initial research question.
Document every claim with concrete evidence: refer to the texts and/or the graphs. Give arguments to justify your choices. The paper should include footnotes with page number and a bibliography.
I will upload 2 sources called – Casa, The refin’d courtier, 218-221.
– Jones, The man of manners, iii-iv, 5-7. The page numbers provided are the only pages needed for the paper.
The number of sources is three with the additional secondary source but you also have refer to either Weber, Elias and Foucault so I put in 5 for the number of sources. Please use as many of the concepts listed above. Kind Regards.
