Like Maria and Alex in the unit introduction, it can be useful to look beyond first impressions when you encounter and seek to learn about religious traditions. In the Reading, you learned about many systems of belief, but for this Assignment, you will focus on Christianity and either Islam or Buddhism. The objective of the Assignment is to demonstrate what you have learned in the investigations for this unit and how you can compare the principles of two faiths.
You will compose an essay introducing and demonstrating one similarity and one difference between the belief systems of early Christianity and either Buddhism or Islam. The fact that these religions were spread through trade cannot be used as a similarity or difference. Rather, the awareness that came through the reading in the module should give you a better sense of the belief systems, and this should be the focus.
Part I: Introduce the idea from belief that you see as a point of commonality. Offer an explanation of the role of this belief in demonstrations of early Christianity. Next, offer an explanation of the role of this belief in demonstrations of either Buddhism or Islam. Finally, spend time explaining how you came to see these ideas through your investigation and why you believe these ideas are similar.
Part II: Select an idea that you found to be different and explain how this difference is a part of early Christianity and either Buddhism or Islam. What role does this difference hold in the religious systems? What is the purpose of this idea in each religion?
Be sure to balance the essay so you spend equal time on Part I and Part II. You may find the point of disagreement easier to discover, but there should be an emphasis on the shared idea held by the two religions as well.
Use and cite the text to give support for the idea they have in common. For evidence to support this, it will be helpful to discuss some of the practices, texts, art and architecture, or written works that help establish this commonality. You are welcome to speak from personal experiences or to discuss the contrasts and differences as well.
The Assignment should be at least 500 words. You should follow the Assignment template in Doc Sharing. Follow the formatting guidelines put forth in the APA style of writing, and structure your thoughts in essay format – introductory paragraph and thesis statement, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. Submit the project to the Dropbox when it is complete.
