This project will engage multi-modal genres; it is part expository and argument. It is an investigation of diversity within a field of work. It is important to be as well-versed in all of the facets of a particular line of work; this also includes understanding the demographics of the field. Your co-op experience may have helped orient you to the practical aspects of a job, and you may use the experience to capture some of the data necessary for this project.
I. Collect data:
Using the career presented in project 1(or co-op), explore the following facets of identities represented in the field.
1. What is the representation of ethnic/racial identities in the field broadly? What is the ratio. Choose a firm or company to investigate narrowly (perhaps a co-op).
2. What is the representation of gender identities in the field broadly? What is the ratio. Choose a firm or company to investigate narrowly (perhaps a co-op).
3. Who works in the field? Where are the most successful in the field trained or educated? Contributions?
II. Individual Perspectives: Protected(coded) identities
a. Find a person in the field (opposite of your gender) to discuss their perspectives of race and gender representation in their line of work. Some general questions are offered here, but you may ask your interviewee to expand on the perspectives of “other” co-workers. Once you’ve found an interview candidate, it is important that you offer written consent letting them know that their identities and work locations will not be disclosed in the project.
i. How many different ethnicities/genders do you work with?
ii. What is the general relationship among co-workers?
iii. Do you have supervisor(s) that are different in ethnicity/gender?
iv. Are there discussions or conscious efforts to achieve greater diversity and inclusion in your work?
III. The presentation: Create a graphic to illustrate statistics and ratios.
IV. The paper: While this is essentially expository writing, you should also make a strong case for increased representation.
