Bad News Business Letter
This assignment is a letter you write in response to a customer complaint or the delivery of news to someone that will be perceived as bad news. In Chapter 8, we will discuss the importance of giving people bad news in the most effective manner. This assignment is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your knowledge and ability regarding that skill. We will discuss the importance of direct and indirect communication in class. This assignment is essentially a reflection of your ability to grasp and use the concepts of giving bad news to others in the most effective way possible.
There are a few scenarios that you should NOT use as the basis for your letter. They are as follows:
– Employment turn down letters. These are so boilerplate now as to be meaningless for this assignment.
– Letters that would normally go through a legal department of an attorney for vetting.
– Letters involving the breakup between couples; or griping, unloading emotions types of letters.
– Any situation where a suggested resolution to a problem results in the letter recipient “coming out ahead in the situation).
Important notes and requirements:
– The essence of this assignment is that someone is getting bad news AND losing something or value or something they want. You are delivering that news and must justify the news in light of the circumstances.
– You (student) will come up with the scenario you write about. We will cover what is acceptable and what is not in class in fuller detail.
– The letter is exactly that – a letter. It will be dated. It will have a recipient with mailing address and a salutation (Dear Mr. Smith). The recipient can be real or made up for the purpose of the assignment. However, please don’t use the actual, real names of people.
– The letter must be a full page, but there is not a hard word count requirement. It should be single spaced. Some software double spaces the recipient contact information and single spaces the body of the letter. Make sure everything is single spaced with appropriate spacing between section.
– This is a one letter grade reduction for each day late. Once five days late (including weekend days), the paper is assigned a ZERO (-0-) and there is no opportunity to resubmit. Plan your time well so as to avoid last minute conflicts or issues.
– Use 12 point Times New Roman Font.
– Paper will be submitted through SAFE ASSIGN to insure its integrity. Papers should not be emailed to your professor at any time. Email submissions do not count as on-time submissions.
– Topic of your choice as long as it is a realistic situation and it involves the recipient losing something the value where you have to justify the decision.
– Use the indirect method of giving bad news in the letter
