Thesis requirement

2. all the references for the bible has to be from the same author……use references from Mark, OR Matthew, OR Paul (the first letter to Corinthians)…DON`T use references from Mark AND Matthew……
3. A thesis statement needs to have more than simply observations. It has to be arguable, and explanatory (ex. what does the observations tell you and how do they lead to your theisis), not facts.
4. Put the most possible counterargument at the end of the essay

Prompt
Note: Evidence for your essay must be based only on the assigned texts.
1. In his Confessions, Augustine focuses on how a person can be saved given man’s sinful nature. Jesus’ teachings frequently focus on sin and sinners in the Gospels. Paul, too, offers his views on the nature of sin in his Letters. Is Augustine’s conception of original sin – that man is sinful by nature – in line with what the New Testament writers say about Jesus’ own teachings? Using Augustine and one of the New Testament authors — Mark, Matthew, or Paul (using evidence from the First Letter to the Corinthians) — write a thesis-based essay in which you compare or contrast Augustine and the New Testament on the Christian view of sin.
2. Augustine and Paul discuss the relationship between fleshly temptation (body) and purity of spirit (soul). How do they present this relationship? How similar or different are they? Using Augustine (using evidence from Confessions) and Paul (using evidence from the First Letter to the Corinthians), write a thesis- based essay in which you compare or contrast their views on the relationship between the body and the soul.
3. Some scholars have asserted that Paul derived his inspiration from the life and teachings of Jesus, but what Paul teaches in his Letters is so far from Jesus’ teaching in the Gospels as to constitute an entirely different religion. Is Paul the true founder of Christianity? Is Paul’s message consistent or inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus as represented in the Gospels? Focusing on a specific theme, write a thesis-based essay that compares or contrasts the teachings of Jesus (as portrayed by Mark or Matthew) and Paul (using evidence from the First Letter to the Corinthians).
Required:
As usual in Humanities, your paper should provide evidence and argument for a clear thesis. One test of an argument is its ability to withstand a plausible counter-argument. Your essay must take account of the most plausible counter- argument to your thesis and must respond adequately to it.
Thesis: Make sure that your claim meets the standards outlined in the “Thesis” handout.
4 tests for a good thesis:

1. Is it an explanation, not a fact?
2. Can someone argue against it?
3. Is it too obvious to be worth defending?
4. Is it precise?
Evidence: Make sure your argument shows just how the textual evidence supports the thesis.
Note: In a compare OR contrast essay, you must do the following in the introductory paragraph:
A. Introduce the theme
B. Establish the authors’ views on the given theme.
C. Assert your own argument about the differences OR the similarities
between the two texts/authors on the given theme.
