Case: Solving a Disciplinary Action Problem over the Internet
Roy Jackson, a recent business school graduate, is in his first job as a district sales manager. He hasnt been in this position nearly long enough to feel confident in confronting one of his top sales representatives, Jim Orrin. Jim has led the district in sales for the past eight years and is currently on track for a record year. Jim has a serious problem with alcohol abuse, however, and came to the office drunk for the third time this month.
Uncertain as to his next action, Roy turns to his PC and clicks on an icon that takes him to his firms intranet program Management Advisor/Drug and Alcohol Abuse/Confronting an Employee. This program, developed by the training department and several line managers, plays a video that describes the firms policy on providing help to an employee with a substance abuse problem. It also details the steps of a confrontation interview.
The program then asks if the viewer would like to see an example of a confrontation interview. When Roy clicks on yes, he sees a 10-minute tape of a confrontation interview showing the steps and points the manager should make, typical employee responses and how a manager can deal with each.
Orrin, suspecting that he may be fired, uses a company kiosk and clicks on the HR icon. He reaches a program on Employee Assistance/Drug Abuse & Alcohol/Telling Your Boss You Have a Problem. He then views a tape advising him how to inform his boss that he needs assistance for a personal problem and how he can get help without being terminated.
