This is an assignment in historical synthesis and imagination, not research. Use what you’ve learned from readings and class sessions and do not go looking for other readings. Your assignment is to write an imaginary letter or transcript of a conversation in which an 80-year old Chinese adult tells a grandchild, other young relative, student, or disciple some of the most important things about his or her life in the previous eighty years. The idea is NOT to regurgitate a list of historical events, but to imagine a life experience and through that form the basis for offering advice, support, admonition and or/council to a young person at a particular moment in history. You may imagine this taking place at any time in Chinese history. Main themes may include how the person earned a living, a revolution or other upheaval experienced, relations within the family and between the sexes, religious convictions and experiences, and much more.
What are we looking for?
1) Real imaginative engagement with what it was like to think certain thoughts, hold certain values, live through certain changes.
2) Attention to continuity and change through a couple of generations (about 80 years).
3) Attention to contexts of wider changes, institutions.
4) Evidence that once you found a project that engaged you, you went back to your readings and class notes and looked for specific quotes, facts, and ideas that would enrich your picture of an imagined life.
5) Do not write from the perspective of a specific known historical figure we have read about, but you can certainly use such a figure as a take-off point for imagining the life of a poor monk, a struggling student, an elite wife and mother, or whatever.
6) If you have a Chinese family, you might draw on a family story for inspiration, but you should not use it too directly, and in such a case you should be especially careful to pay attention to wider contexts.
