1. A New Normal. Despite Warren Harding’s call for a “return to normalcy,” the 1920’s was a very distinctive period, in many ways unlike any earlier period in U.S. History. Describe some of the ways that American society was undergoing significant changes in the 1920’s, making the country very different than it was before World War I. In what ways did the 1920’s create a “modern” society much more similar to ours in the early 21st century? On the other hand, in what ways could it be premature to call the 1920’s “modern like us”?
2. The Great Migration. Give a brief definition and description of what the Arnesen book refers to as the “Great Migration,” and explain its significance for understanding early 20th century U.S. history. For example, how was the U.S. a very different place before and after the period of the Great Migration? In what ways did migration change the lives of those who moved to new areas? In what ways did those who migrate change the areas they moved into?
