1) Choose one character (other than Evelyn/Eve) from The Passion of New Eve and make a claim about that character’s place in the narrative. This may involve considering their narrative arc (i.e. how do they change throughout the novel—how are they different at the end of the novel?) as well as the effect they have on other (presumably more central) characters. What role does this character play in the novel, and how is it related to the central concerns of the novel?
2) Place and setting seem particularly central to The Passion of New Eve, whether it’s apocalyptic New York, Beulah, the desert, Zero’s compound, Tristessa’s home, or the cave at the novel’s close. Choose one of these spaces, and make a claim about how it effects the characters that occupy it. Is the space singular in the novel, or does it have connections with other settings throughout the narrative? How does the description of the space reflect Carter’s larger concerns in the novel?
The following list gives suggestions of things to consider when you are close reading the texts. However, it is essential to remember that it is not enough to simply comment on these elements (nor is it necessary to comment on all of them)—you need to make a statement (or thesis) about them and the effect(s) that they have:
1) From what perspective is the story told? Does this perspective change? Do we see any limits or biases from our narrator?
2) What kind of figurative language (simile, metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, etc.) does the author use? Is any of this figurative language attached to one character in particular, or is it used to connect characters together? Are there any allusions to other literary texts, or other works of art throughout the novel? What effect do these allusions have?
3) What images stick out in the novel/story—images that are especially vivid, surprising, out of place, contradictory, memorable, etc. Are these images complimentary with one another, or do they clash/contradict? As above, are any of these images attached to one character in particular?
4) How is the order of presentation important in this novel? How does the author play with chronology to delay the revelation of important information?
